PS3 Cables

A HDMI cable is required for people wishing their Playstation 3 to output a high definition signal to their HDTV.

Interestingly, Sony do not bundle a HDMI cable with their console. This has led to some ill feeling towards to Sony, for those who think it should be bundled, and for those who did not realise it was not bundled when buying the console. Personally speaking, I made the mistake of not realising Sony did not bundle a HDMI cable. This led to a three day wait while the cable arrived through the post. Switching from SCART to HDMI was startling. The difference in definition is simple huge.

An official Sony HDMI cable is rather expensive, costing in the region of £17.99. In comparison, some third party manufacturer's price their cables in the region of three to five pounds. However, a cable should be underrated, a more expensive cable will generally produce a superior picture quality. The current Sony cable supports a resolution of up to 1080p. It will also help to transmit an eight channel digital audio signal.

A HDTV is one which can display 720 or more vertical lines of video resolution. A standard TV can display 480. The current standardised HD formats are as follows,

720p - 1280×720
1080i - 1920×1080
1080p - 1920×1080
2160p - 3840×2160

The majority of PS3 HDMI cables will support 480p/720p/1080i/1080p formats.
